When is the Countdown to Christmas 2026 at Santa Claus Village?

On Saturday 7 November 2026 at 18:00 Finnish time, in the central square of the village. It is free and lasts about 30 minutes.

The village calls it its Traditional Countdown to Christmas: an annual celebration of the Christmas spirit that marks the start of the season. The village's event page lists musical Christmas performances first, then the opening ceremony itself, which ends when Santa arrives and gives his speech. The village asks people to come on time, and it starts on the dot. Arrive a little early if you want a view of the stage.

Getting there is easy that evening. The village says free shuttle buses run from 16:30 to 20:30 between Rovaniemi city centre, leaving in front of Pub Uitto at Korkalonkatu 25, and the village, where they stop behind Christmas House. Bus 8 runs too, about half an hour from the centre, and parking at the village is free. The date is later than last year: in 2025 the event was on 25 October. What opens when in the 2026-27 season?

SantaPark first, on 31 October; then the Countdown on 7 November, husky rides in the village on 30 November, Santa's Snowtubing on 3 December, Snowman World on 6 December and Arctic SnowHotel visits on 15 December.

The free parts of the village run all year: Santa Claus Office, Christmas House, the Arctic Circle line and the post office. The paid winter attractions open one by one as the snow and the cold arrive. Snowman World is built from snow and ice during November, which is why it waits until 6 December. Santa's Snowtubing is new this winter, with two to four slopes depending on snow.

Two of the places in the table are not in the village. SantaPark, the Home Cavern of Santa Claus, is a separate paid park near the airport, a short drive away; our village vs SantaPark guide compares them. Arctic SnowHotel is at Lake Lehtojärvi, about 30 km from the village.

What are Santa Claus Office and Christmas House opening hours in 2026-27?

Santa Claus Office opens 10:00-18:00 until 15 November, 09:00-19:00 from 16 November, and 08:00-20:00 every day from 30 November to 3 January. Christmas House opens 9:00-20:00 for most of the season and 8:00-22:00 on 24 and 25 December.

Both places let you meet Santa for free, with no ticket and no booking for the regular meeting. Santa Claus Office is the big building with the tower on the central square, by the Arctic Circle line. Christmas House Santa Claus is at Tähtikuja 2, inside Santa Claus Holiday Village. Official photos are extra at Santa Claus Office, from EUR 57, and own cameras are not allowed in Santa's room.

From 4 January 2027 Santa Claus Office goes back to 09:00-18:00 until the end of March, then 10:00-17:00 in April and May. On the busiest days you first pick up a free entry time at the red cabin by the entrance: our December queues post explains how it works.

What are the post office opening hours at Santa Claus Village?

Santa Claus' Main Post Office is open 10:00-17:00 until 30 October, until at least 18:00 every day in November, and 9:00-20:00 from 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027.

It is a real, full-service post office, run as part of the Finnish Post network, and everything posted there gets the special Arctic Circle postmark. The mailbox outside stamps outgoing mail with the same postmark. Posti says Santa has received almost 25 million letters from about 200 countries, and almost 30,000 a day in the busiest weeks.

The November closing time differs between sources: the village lists 19:00, Posti's own page 18:00. Plan on 18:00. For a letter from Santa sent to your home, Posti's Santa's letter has order deadlines in 2026: 23 November for addresses outside Europe, 3 December for Europe and 13 December for Finland. Is Santa Claus Village open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

Yes. Santa Claus Office is open 08:00-20:00 on 24 and 25 December, Christmas House 8:00-22:00, and Snowman World and SantaPark are open too. A few shops close or open short hours.

Santa does not take the day off. On 24 and 25 December the village runs close to normal hours, with Christmas House staying open later than any other day of the year. Snowman World keeps its regular hours and adds a second Snow Restaurant dinner seating at 20:00 on both days; SantaPark opens 9:00-18:00 and has festive dinners on 24, 25 and 31 December. Book any Christmas meal well ahead. December tables fill up.

Expect the village to be at its fullest in the days before Christmas. In 2025 it also held a Santa's Grand Departure celebration on 23 December; the 2026 plans will appear on the village's News and events page.

Is November or December better for a Christmas visit?

December has the full programme: Snowman World, the husky rides and the longest hours. Early November is calmer, with shorter queues, but snow is not guaranteed and some rides have not started.

Snow usually arrives in November, sometimes in October, sometimes only in early December, and no company can promise it. Rides run from mid-November at the earliest, and early in the season they may be shorter or use wheeled carts when snow is thin. Daylight shrinks fast: about 7 hours at the start of November, about 5 at the end, and only two to three hours around the winter solstice. Average daily temperatures at Rovaniemi Airport are about -4 °C in November and -8 °C in December (Finnish Meteorological Institute normals), and cold snaps of -25 °C and below happen.

Our take: the first days of December are the sweet spot for most families. The husky rides and the snowtubing are running and Snowman World opens on the 6th. December is the busiest month, so plan for the Santa queue whichever week you pick.
